Botanical Characteristics

Birdseye Maple is not a distinct species of maple but rather a growth anomaly. It is almost exclusively harvested from hard maple, specifically Acer saccharum. The name comes from the tiny, rounded “eyes” scattered across its surface. These “eyes” are actually small knots, which are believed to be formed when the tree attempts to start new buds in response to unfavorable growing conditions. The tree tries to grow new shoots to get more sunlight, but the shoots are aborted, leaving behind the characteristic birdseye figure.

Distribution

It is native to northeastern North America, with a large supply coming from trees growing in the Great Lakes region of Canada and the United States, as well as some varieties in the Rocky Mountains.

Uses

Birdseye Maple is widely used in high - end applications. It is often made into veneers for luxury furniture, such as drawer fronts, table tops, and chair backs. It is also popular in the production of musical instruments, such as guitars and bowed instruments, as well as in automobile trim, custom rifle stocks, pool cues, jewelry boxes, and decorative canes.

Value
